I had the same issue with my 540C. The ribbon unplug trick worked for me.

Good luck...I love the 540c Powerbook!

The web experience as others have stated does suck compared to a more current OS.

But I've had no problems with either IE 5, Netscapes 3 and 5.

I've Followed the advice here at System 7 Today ...

Subject: Had some love with the G3 Sonnet CPU
I bought a 8100/80 on eBay for $59.00 and spent the $$$ for the Sonnet G3 nubus upgrade and the video adapter card, (I had bought that from eBay for $5.00 with max video ram).

With 7.6.1 installed ...
