Subject: PCI gigabit Ethernet cards....
Any Realtek RTL8169-based card will work wonderfully to get gigabit in 7.x:

There's even official drivers for mac-- search for:
RTL8169xV111.sit

is the latest driver package for it.

Another issue to watch for- Word 5.1a also pretty much fails at supporting large volume sizes- From memory, the root of the problem is in the assumption that a volume would never be any larger than 2G ...
