This entire site is devoted to the benefits of using Mac OS 7.6.1. The link at the bottom of the page "Why System 7" is an excellent starting point.

In the area of traditional productivity applications, data bases, word processing and spreadsheets System 7 will preform faster on the same hardware than a newer OS. There are fewer background processes which tends to keep the focus on the task at hand. The user interface also tends to be simpler, cleaner, and more discover-able.

The internet and networking have become very important in newer OSes and current computer usage. One's experiences with web browsing on System 7 will be very poor. There are a variety of challenges in connecting to networks involving non and new Apple hardware. Multi-media has been evolving with new formats and heftier hardware requirements, which are not easy to experience on System 7.

As with using most any hardware and OS people use System 7 because they enjoy using it and are able to do the tasks they wish to get done. The hey day of System 7, represents a time in Apple's history of great experimentation in hardware and software.

Like many things, it is much better to experience System 7 than it is to describe it.

I think PRO is the fact, that you can still use your old software from the early 90ties on a fast OS needing only small resources. 7 was one of the best OS from Apple with a one button mouse and a intuitive GUI, miles ahead of its competitors at its time. Actually some of those GUIs were pale blueprints of System7. This is how it looks: http://www.mediafire.com/?17sha5gtosdcng3

Obviously you wont find iTunes or GoogleEarth for 7.

  • very fast on old Macintosh hardware
  • was a major platform for years, has tons of apps available
  • is fairly robust by old operating system standards, full networking, sound, 3D video etc out of the box
  • Can still do things that haven't changed much over the years, IE word processing, older Photoshop, page layout
  • Makes a good platform for digitizing old movies using one of the many Macs with built-in AV input from that era

  • Old Mac OS (pre-X) is buggy and crashes a lot compared to today
  • Web browsing, email are essentially dead ends
  • Direct networking with modern Macs broke with Leopard or Snow Leopard (I forget)
  • Doesn't run on Macs from 1998 and up
  • The newest software tops out around 2000 or 2001. Most apps not updated since late 1990s
